The VAW belongs to the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (D-BAUG) at ETH Zurich and operates a large hydraulic testing hall at Hönggerberg addressing questions in hydraulic engineering, river engineering, and glaciology. The work is at the interface of civil engineering, environmental engineering, and earth sciences. In addition to scientific activities, the VAW also undertakes assignments for federal and cantonal authorities as well as for companies, especially from the energy sector, and consulting engineering offices.
Job description
Start date January 1, 2026 or by arrangement.
As a metalworker, industrial mechanic, or technical allrounder, you will play a central role in the construction of our large-scale physical models for hydraulic testing, which are set up in the VAW testing hall. Your main tasks include:
- Piping construction: building and installing stainless steel pipes to connect the models to the laboratory water circuit
- Assembly of fittings
- Plant and apparatus construction, metalworking for models and field measurement campaigns (e.g., supports, frame constructions, brackets, sheet metal constructions made of stainless steel and brass, movable constructions)
- On-site installation of measurement setups in the field (work outside the testing hall approx. 10 days/year)
- Application of various welding methods (MIG/MAG, electrode and aluminum welding) as well as soft and hard soldering
- Maintenance and repair of hydraulic pumps, laboratory equipment, and devices
- Mechanical constructions
- Advising staff and students in implementing their projects
- Project-related work for other institutes of D-BAUG
Profile
- Completed training as pipe fitter or metalworker EFZ
- Several years of professional experience
- Welding certificates (MIG, MAG) and very good manual skills
- Precise working method and quick comprehension
- Teamwork skills and enjoyment in collaborating with young scientists
- Good German and English skills
- Openness to new challenges in an interdisciplinary research environment
