FOR THE GENEVA ACADEMY OF INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW AND HUMAN RIGHTS

The Geneva Academy provides postgraduate education, conducts academic legal research and policy studies, organizes training courses and expert meetings. We concentrate on branches of international law that relate to situations of armed conflict, protracted violence, protection of human rights and transitional justice. We currently offer three master programmes as follows:
 
-The LLM in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (LLM)
-The Master of Advanced Studies in Transitional Justice, Human Rights and the Rule of Law (MTJ)
-The Executive Master in International Law in Armed Conflict (ExMas)

Mission
The Head of Education works under the direct supervision of and reports to the Director of the Geneva Academy. He/she is part of the Geneva Academy’s Executive Committee.
The Head of Education is in charge of the coordination and implementation of the Masters Programmes and other trainings and education activities for the Geneva Academy. He/she manages the team of the Education Unit and ensures the smooth running of education programmes of the highest standards.
 
Responsibilities
1. Coordinate and implement the Masters Programmes and other trainings and education activities. In particular to
a) Coordinate and implement Education Programmes under the Director’s supervision;
b) Make suggestions for the continuous development and innovation of Education Programmes at the Academy
    and participate in the development of the strategy to that effect;
c) Propose study plans for Master Programmes to be validated by the Director and the Masters Committee;
d) Prepare and supervise the drafting of official documents related to the master programmes and other
    educational activities and propose necessary updates of the masters’ regulations;
e) Ensure, in close coordination with the Communication Manager, a proper communication on Education
    Programmes;
f) Organize and participate in events related to the Masters programmes (Opening Ceremony, Graduation etc.);
g) Organize, coordinate and participate in the admission process of new students under the supervision of the
     Director;

2.Manage the Education Unit, in particular to:
        a) Supervise the Education Unit, including the student office, the coordinator of professionalizing activities and
            the teaching assistants ;
b) Determine the assignments of each team-member of the Education Unit, provide regular feedback and
    conduct yearly appraisals of the team-members of the Education Unit;
c) Organize and participate in the hiring process of new team-members in the Education Unit ;
d) Coordinate consultants and external experts;
e) Report to the Director on the realization of the objectives and on the financial and HR situation of the
    Education Unit on a regular basis;
         f) Manage and follow up on all administrative and financial aspects of the education programmes, with the
            support of the administrative team and in collaboration with the Executive Director.

3. Fundraising to finance the students’ scholarships, in particular to:
        a) Develop and implement a fundraising plan in close collaboration with the Direction;
        b) Coordinate, prepare and supervise funding applications and reports to scholarships donors;
        c) Maintain contacts with existing funders and develop new contacts.

4.Ensure strong relationship with the professors and experts teaching at the Academy and collaborate with other
   units of the Geneva Academy and with the parent institutions, in particular to:
a) Manage the relationship with the Faculty;
b) Support the Director in the selection and contacts with external professors and experts;
c) Strengthen synergies between education programmes conducted at the Geneva Academy and
    policy research & the GHRP;
d) Ensure strong relationship and coordination with the concerned department of the parent institutions.
 
Qualifications
-PhD in international law, preferably with a specialization in international humanitarian law, human rights   
 law and/or international criminal law, a real asset. Persons who do not hold a PhD but a masters’ degree
 and who have gathered relevant experience in academia/university education may also apply;
-At least 7 years of relevant professional experience in International Law, Education Programmes and -Team Management;
-Excellent commend of both English and French;
-Capacity to handle workload with peak periods;
-Problem-solving abilities;
-Innovative and creative thinking;
-Reliability and autonomy;
-Excellent communication skills.
