EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, is one of the most dynamic university campuses in Europe and ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide. The EPFL employs more than 6,500 people supporting the three main missions of the institution: education, research and innovation. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of more than 17,000 people, including over 12,500 students and 4,000 researchers from more than 120 different countries.

Mission

The Laboratory of Photonics and Quantum Measurements (LPQM) at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is looking for a Cleanroom Process Engineer for Micro/Nanofabrication.

The Process Engineer will be responsible for coordinating and performing fabrication of wafer scale integrated photonic circuits, ensuring optimal fabrication operations, using LPQM's established process flows in the EPFL clean room facilities (CMi). Furthermore, the candidate will be part of the development team closely working with the packaging engineer and characterization scientist to improve and develop new processes, using new materials, which eventually can be transferred to the future spin-offs.

Main duties and responsibilities

Cleanroom work (70%):

  • Fabricate photonics chips using advanced semiconductor processing (etching, lithography).
  • Statistical analysis of in-line metrology of the fabrication process, development of qualifying measurements to ensure reproducibility.
  • Qualify new materials, such as photoresist, cladding oxides, wafers, develop new processes.

Management (20%):

  • Coordinate PhD students and fabrication team to ensure communication flow, proper procedures and documentation.
  • Be part of the R&D team, working along the senior R&D engineers, packaging engineers and characterization scientist to develop processes and integrate new materials.
  • Assist in forecasting and planning for future instrumentation and resource needs by conducting product comparisons and thinking actively about new equipment that would benefit the lab and CMi.

Documentation (10%):

  • Contribute to proposal writing, reporting, and research articles, when required.
  • Keep up to date with the groups electronic logging system and reinforce the same for other members of the fabrication team.
Profile

Qualification:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or sciences, with background in electrical, chemical engineering, materials science or physics.
  • 3-5 years equivalent experience in process development, instrument operation, and/or the fabrication industry.
  • Applicants with PhD are also welcome, in this case experience in micro- nanofabrication is required.

Experimental skills:

  • An ability to design and carry out experiments with scientific rigor.
  • An ability to operate instrumentation with a high level of patience and attention to detail.
  • An ability to innovate in the fabrication field by modifying equipment and/or known processes to achieve new capabilities.
  • An ability to learn quickly and adequately transfer that knowledge to other researchers through teaching/documentation.
  • Willingness to maintain highly organized data records.
  • A desire to meet - and set - high standards.

Interpersonal skills:

  • Ability to work independently, with a high level of responsibility.
  • Strong communication skills towards the other lab researchers and CMi staff.
  • Teamwork skills and an ability to collaborate with coworkers having diverse skills and backgrounds.

Computer/software skills:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity CAD software packages considered a plus.
  • Familiarity with 8D and DoD is a plus.

Languages:

  • Working proficiency in English and French.
We offer
  • A young, dynamic, flexible and highly motivated R&D environment.
  • A productive team of high scientific and industrial impacts.
  • Excellent laboratory conditions at Center of MicroNanoTechnology at EPFL.
  • Work on technology that can be the basis for future start-up in deep tech from the laboratory.
