The School of Medicine and the Chair of Health Economics, Policy and Management were founded in 2020 and are the latest stage of the growth path of the University of St. Gallen. We offer the opportunity to conduct innovative research in an international, multidisciplinary team with high leadership involve-ment and in a dynamic environment. With our research, we inform health policy makers, payers, as well as clinicians and other providers. We derive implications in the fields of health economics, health care management, health systems, and health policy research – always with the goal in mind to improve the quality of care for patients.

SNF PhD-candidate and research assistant position at the Chair of Health Economics, Policy, and Management (m/w/d)

Your tasks

This position is part of the research project “Swiss hospital capacity planning: An empirical evaluation of its impact on hospital service delivery, quality and costs”, funded by the Swiss National Fund (SNF).
As PhD-candidate and research assistant, you will:

  • Refine answer and test the project's research questions with quantitative, empirical methods using large datasets from the Swiss Federal Statistics Office and other sources
  • Prepare high-quality manuscripts for publication in international journals and present your research results on (inter-) national conferences
  • Show initiative and drive your research topics independently and with high motivation
  • Work and communicate effectively with diverse teams in a structured manner and work directly with the leadership team on diverse topics and projects
  • Enroll in a PhD-program of the University of St.Gallen; we highly recommend the PEcon program (Economics and Econometrics)

Your profile

We are looking for highly qualified and motivated candidates:

  • Outstanding Master's degree in the field of (health) economics or econometrics, or public health or management studies with a clear quantitative focus, or similar with a grade point average of at least 5.0 or the equivalent for non-Swiss degrees (corresponds for instance to a 2.0 in DE and AT)
  • Experience in handling large datasets
  • Strong analytical skills (e.g., microeconomics, applied econometrics, causal inference)
  • Advanced knowledge of at least one programming language (e.g., R, stata, python) and high motivation to improve econometric skillset
  • Outstanding teamwork ability
  • Result-oriented working style with a high degree of initiative, creativity, and team spirit
  • High motivation and ability to work on multiple research questions at the same time
  • Confident, open, constructive, and engaging communication style internally and externally
  • Experience with European and other healthcare systems is a plus
  • Very good knowledge of English, both written and spoken; fluent in German is a plus
