About H-55
As the technological spin-off of Solar Impulse, the first electric airplane to fly around the world, the mission of H55, is to make aviation clean, safe, and affordable.
The company’s strengths and competencies lie in developing propulsion and energy storage solutions which are modular, lightweight, and certifiable.
Having integrated and flown 4 electric airplanes, the Swiss start-up has been selected by Pratt & Whitney Canada to provide the battery pack for its regional hybrid-electric flight demonstrator. This recent announcement is a further illustration of H55’s position as a major enabler in the electric commuter market.
About the role
H55 is seeking a (Senior) Electric Hardware Drive Engineer to join our team as we continue to push the boundaries of electric propulsion systems (EPS). In this role, you will play a crucial part in the design, analysis, and certification (DO-178C/DO-254) of electric motors (EM) and electric drive systems (EDS) for aerospace applications, contributing to our V&V (Verification & Validation) processes in line with ARP4754A standards. You will be heavily involved in the electromagnetic (EM) modelling of motors, hardware development, and system integration.
Specifically, you will be responsible to:
- Electric Motor Design (EMD): Participate in the design and electromagnetic analysis (EMA) of electric motors, optimizing motor performance for high-efficiency propulsion (HEP) in compliance with DO-160 and MIL-STD-704 standards.
- Motor Controller and Test Bench Development: Participate in motor controllers (MC) and develop test benches (TB) for electric motor and propeller systems, utilizing PCB design and overseeing HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) testing and component integration (CI).
- Certification Process: Work closely with the certification team to ensure compliance with EASA CS-23, CS-25, and FAA Part 23 certification standards for electrified propulsion.
- Documentation: Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including ICDs (Interface Control Documents), design descriptions, FMEAs (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), and test procedures (QTP, VTP;...).
- System Testing: Define and execute V&V activities, including derisking, debugging, and troubleshooting of integrated systems following DO-178C and DO-254 protocols.
- Collaboration: Engage with cross-functional teams across software, hardware, and testing groups to ensure system-level integration and performance optimization.
- Continuous Improvement: Contribute to continuous improvement (CI) initiatives, enhancing motor reliability and overall system performance in line with AS9100 standards.
Your Profile
- Education: Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Mechatronics, or related fields.
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in electric motor design (EMD), power electronics (PE), or electric drive systems (EDS) development, preferably within aerospace, automotive, or eVTOL sectors.
- Extensive experience in electric motor design and electromagnetic analysis (EMA).
- Expertise in PCB design, layout, and hardware commissioning (HC).
- Familiarity with certification standards (e.g., EASA, FAA, DO-254, DO-160).
- Strong knowledge of power electronics (PE), motor controllers, and drive systems (DS).
- Proficiency in simulation tools such as Simetrix, Spice, MATLAB/Simulink, and experience with Altium Designer or equivalent software.
- Soft Skills: Proactive, solution-oriented, and a strong team player with excellent documentation and communication skills.
- Languages: Fluency in English is required; French is a plus.
What we offer
- An amazing work Location in Sion, Valais in the heart of Swiss Alps.
- A highly dynamic and multicultural environment where you can grow and learn by working on ambitious challenges to shape the future of Electric Aviation.
- We offer a position which contributes to valuable and impactful work in a stimulating an international environment
