About the job
Take on leadership responsibility in internal medicine and emergency medicine while still living a predictable life: Work week by week alternately on the ward and in the emergency department at a family-run acute hospital about 10 minutes from Basel. You only take weekend shifts about every three months.
If you are looking for a hospital where people still know each other by name in the corridor, you are in the right place. The acute hospital ensures extended basic care for its region. The heart of the medicine is a large emergency department open around the clock. In addition, there is an internal medicine ward and a compact IMC, which is entirely managed by internal medicine.
Professionally, the team is broader than one would expect from a hospital of this size. The senior staff includes specialists in infectiology, oncology, haematology, endocrinology and geriatrics, complemented by gastroenterology as well as visceral, trauma and orthopaedic surgery. You discuss complex cases not by consultation requests across three floors, but directly on site. At the same time, the hospital is part of a larger public hospital network and benefits from its structures.
The location is in the Basel agglomeration, with the train bringing you to the city in about ten minutes. Basel lies at the tri-border area of Switzerland, Germany and France. The city offers around 40 museums, a theatre with opera, drama and ballet, as well as the world-leading art fair Art Basel. In summer, you can swim right through the city in the Rhine.
For families, there are free public schools and additionally international schools with IB or Cambridge qualifications. The oldest university in Switzerland is also located in Basel. On weekends, the Black Forest, Vosges and Jura are quickly reached.
Your tasks:
- You alternate weekly between the emergency department and the internal medicine ward including IMC, carrying medical responsibility for your patients
- As deputy head of the department, you help shape processes, organisation and team development and take on the leadership role during absences
- You pass on your knowledge in clinical practice and support assistant and senior physicians professionally and personally
- Once a week you take the on-call duty from about 10:30 pm, when the senior physician presence in the emergency department ends. Weekend duty occurs only every three months
- For complex cases, you involve the in-house specialists and coordinate closely with gastroenterology and surgery
Your competencies:
- Specialist title in General Internal Medicine. For foreign diplomas, MEBEKO recognition is required. We support you with advice and financially in this process
- Several years of experience as a senior physician, ideally also in an interdisciplinary emergency department
- Desire for leadership and for training younger colleagues, combined with decisiveness
- Clear, appreciative communication and interest in actively developing care
Your benefits:
- Part-time or full-time from 60 to 100%, suitable for your life phase
- Predictable routine: weekend duty only about every three months
- 13 monthly salaries, performance bonus and annual salary development according to experience levels
- Ultrasound development opportunities, with the possibility to acquire a POCUS or competency certificate
- Staff accommodation at the site (subject to availability), to ensure a smooth start in Switzerland without housing pressure
- Free choice of residence: move to Switzerland or live in Germany as a cross-border commuter
