The position is limited to 6 months
At the Institute of German Studies at the University of Bern, in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Language and Society (CSLS), a third-party funded position for a student assistant is to be filled.
The position is part of the research project "Sound Effects" funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). This project, located in sociophonetics, investigates the role of regional differences in pronunciation among people in various regions of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in the perception and evaluation of language. Various research methods are combined to find out which linguistic and non-linguistic features play a role in the formation of impressions, attitudes, and evaluations. The project thus makes an important contribution to questions of dialect research, sociolinguistics, and attitude research.
Tasks
- Support in the preparation and cleaning of datasets
- Conducting and documenting simple analyses and script executions in Excel
- Maintenance and organization of data inventories
Requirements
Essential criteria
- Enrollment in a B.A. or M.A. program at the University of Bern during the entire contract period
- German at native speaker level
Desired criteria
- Interest in socio-/variation linguistics of German as well as basic professional knowledge
- Good knowledge of Excel and/or R or willingness to acquire these skills
- Careful, structured, and reliable working style
Salary
- The gross annual salary is based on the current cantonal guidelines
