Job description
The Physics Section and the Department of Nuclear and Corpuscular Physics (DPNC) at the University of Geneva play a major role in experimental particle physics research, particularly in the development of advanced detectors and read-out systems, experiments at CERN, as well as research and development for future colliders.
As part of strengthening its activities related to the ATLAS experiment at CERN, the Phase-II upgrade of the HL-LHC, and the development of new research and development activities for the Future Circular Collider (FCC), the Department is opening a position for
Assistant Professor at 100%, 1 year renewable from 1 September 2026
for a scientist with solid expertise in the reconstruction of hadronic final states and jet physics in experiments at hadron colliders.
The appointed person will develop a research programme focused on jet reconstruction and calibration, precision QCD measurements, as well as improving the understanding and modelling of experimental and theoretical uncertainties affecting precision analyses at the ATLAS experiment and future colliders such as FCC-ee.
Particular attention will be given to the development of advanced hadronic reconstruction techniques in the high-luminosity environments of the HL-LHC, including approaches compatible with real-time processing and triggering constraints. Expertise in pile-up mitigation, analyses based on hadronic final states, machine learning applied to reconstruction, or precision measurements will be especially appreciated.
The recruited person will also contribute to reconstruction and performance studies for future colliders, including FCC activities and associated R&D initiatives, and will actively participate in the scientific activities of the group, including supervision of students and doctoral candidates, teaching participation, writing publications and funding applications, as well as presenting results at international conferences and workshops.
Title and required skills
We require:
- PhD thesis in experimental high-energy physics or related field;
- At least three years of postdoctoral experience in experimental particle physics;
- Excellent expertise in hadronic reconstruction, jet physics, and precision particle physics analyses;
- Very good knowledge of modern reconstruction and data analysis techniques in collider experiments;
- Proven experience in studying and modelling experimental and/or theoretical uncertainties affecting precision measurements;
- Demonstrated experience in activities related to the Phase-II upgrade of the HL-LHC and good knowledge of reconstruction and analysis challenges in very high-luminosity environments;
- Good integration within the ATLAS collaboration;
- Proven participation in activities related to future colliders, notably FCC and/or DRD;
- Experience in machine learning applied to reconstruction or data analysis is an asset;
- Very good spoken and written English;
- Experience in supervising students is appreciated.
