CFC Laboratory Apprentice Option Biology
Want to work within a research and development laboratory dedicated to phage therapy? Join the bacteriophage and phage therapy laboratory at CHUV on 1 August 2027!
Context
The Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) is one of the five Swiss university hospitals and is ranked among the best hospital institutions worldwide according to the Newsweek 2025 ranking. Thanks to its collaboration with the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University of Lausanne and EPFL, it plays a leading role in care, research, and education.
Our research and development laboratory is dedicated to phage therapy, a biological approach that uses bacteriophages – natural viruses specifically targeting bacteria – to fight infections.
In a context of increasing bacterial resistance to antibiotics, phage therapy represents a promising alternative due to its targeted action and adaptability.
You will work in a microbiological environment complying with current standards in a BSL2 level laboratory.
Mission
- You will learn to isolate, select, and produce therapeutic bacteriophages according to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards for therapeutic use in humans.
- You will participate in laboratory experiments, including sample preparation, post-treatment monitoring tests to characterise phage pharmacokinetics and inhibition of their activity in various patient fluids (blood, sputum).
- You will contribute to the maintenance and proper upkeep of the laboratory, ensuring the care of equipment and materials.
- You will write, analyse, and archive your experimental results (laboratory notebook, files, databases).
- You will exchange scientific and technical information within the team and participate in the continuous improvement of methods and protocols.
Profile
- You have completed compulsory schooling (VP level with good results in scientific subjects or grammar school preferred).
- You are precise, methodical, and meticulous, with a strong sense of hygiene and cleanliness.
- You have a logical and rigorous mind, enjoy understanding how things work, and learning through experimentation.
- You demonstrate scientific curiosity and can maintain concentration over time.
- You appreciate teamwork and collaboration in a research environment.
We offer
By joining CHUV as an apprentice, you benefit from:
- A comprehensive, varied, and professional training at the heart of a university hospital
- Close supervision provided by experienced trainers
- The possibility to continue your professional career at CHUV after the apprenticeship, subject to available positions
- Active support to develop your talents, with the opportunity to be selected for SwissSkills, the national skills competition, when the edition matches your cohort
