About the job
Research Scientist Snow Modelling 80-100% (f/m/d)
The Research Unit Snow and Atmosphere at SLF is concerned with the physical properties of the material snow and permafrost, with snow – atmosphere interactions and the role of snow, ice and permafrost in the climate system. The expertise is now modelling should further be developed between MeteoSwiss and SLF in particular for operational applications in meteorological models. In this context, we look for a
This position is initially for two years with main office at SLF Davos. The work is on modelling snow dynamics in operational models such as ICON and SNOWPACK. The overall aim is on improving land surface modelling in particular with respect to improving forecasting of natural hazards such as avalanches or floods. You will work in dynamic teams of international model developers and will be integrated in the snow processes / CRYOS group at SLF and the Numerical Prediction Division at MeteoSwiss.
You hold a university degree in meteorology, engineering, natural sciences or physics and have a strong background in numerical modelling. In particular, knowledge of programming (FORTRAN, C++, Python, GPUs) and an interest in contributing to the next generation of weather and snow models is required. German and English skills as well as experience working with HPC infrastructure are necessary qualifications. You bring solid analytical capacities and a good talent for organisation and communication.
