About the job
Assistant Professor in PTC or Associate Professor at 100%
Job description
The Department of Nuclear and Corpuscular Physics (DPNC) of the Faculty of Science is one of the most active particle physics departments in Europe. Its collider physics programme focuses on the ATLAS experiment at the LHC — with strong involvement in measurements and searches for new physics, in trigger and combined performance activities, and with major responsibility in the construction of the HL-LHC pixel detector — and on the FASER experiment and its extensions in the context of the Forward Physics Facility. The DPNC contributes to the feasibility study of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) through the Swiss CHEF and CHART programmes. Detector construction and R&D rely on the department’s mechanical and electronics workshops, a historic strength of the DPNC. The department is also strongly engaged in gravitational wave physics, astroparticles and space physics, neutrino physics, and applications in medical imaging and translational detectors.
This chair is anchored on detector hardware. We are seeking a candidate whose research background and forward-looking vision are substantially rooted in detector R&D and construction, and who wishes to make the department’s mechanical and electronics laboratories a central component of their programme.
The main focus of the position is on detector hardware, complemented by strengths in HL-LHC physics and detector physics and concepts for future colliders (e.g. FCC). Applications building on the department’s current capabilities (pixel detectors, 4D tracking, integrated electronics), bringing complementary hardware expertise or proposing an evolution of the hardware programme are also welcome, provided the programme is linked to the department’s laboratories and technical infrastructure. The department also has a growing portfolio of work using modern data analysis methods, and a candidate bringing complementary expertise in this area would find a supportive environment for their development.
The position includes teaching responsibilities at the Bachelor level (in French) and at the Master level (in English), in accordance with UNIGE standards. For non-French-speaking colleagues, it is reasonably expected that the French level required for Bachelor teaching will be reached within about three years; linguistic and pedagogical support is offered.
The University of Geneva is committed to equal opportunities and a diverse academic community. Applications from women, persons from underrepresented groups, and those with non-linear career paths are explicitly and warmly encouraged. The position is aimed at candidates at an intermediate career stage, consistent with PAS or PA ranks; career breaks for family reasons, health, or any other non-linear career path are explicitly accommodated and should not discourage otherwise qualified candidates. The University supports dual-career situations, parental leave, childcare, and relocation. Informal enquiries, in full confidence, are welcome at any stage of the procedure.
Title and Required Skills
- A PhD in physics or an equivalent qualification;
- An outstanding publication record in experimental particle physics;
- Demonstrable leadership in detector R&D and construction;
- Proven ability to lead an independent research programme supported by competitive external funding.
Starting date
1st August 2027, or as agreed
Contact
Further information can be obtained from Prof. Tobias Golling, Director of DPNC ( Tobias.Golling@unige.ch ).
Additional information
: Application dossiers must include the following documents:
- a cover letter;
- a detailed curriculum vitae including a complete list of publications;
- a copy of all diplomas;
- a statement of alignment with the chair profile (maximum one page) addressing concretely: (i) how your work relates to the detector hardware anchor of this chair; (ii) how you plan to use the department’s mechanical and electronics laboratories; (iii) how your programme relates to the HL-LHC and/or future collider strands; (iv) your orientation towards the evolution of modern computing tools and data analysis methods in particle physics;
- a research and teaching statement, with explicit attention to the primary anchor on detector hardware and the department’s laboratory environment;
- a list of three referees who can be contacted directly by the committee. Recommendation letters are not requested at this time.
Dossiers must be submitted exclusively online by clicking the "Postuler/Apply now" button below no later than 17 December 2026 (23:59 Geneva time).
NO APPLICATIONS SENT BY E-MAIL OR POST WILL BE ACCEPTED.
