Scientific Staff, Doctoral Candidates or Postdoctoral Researchers in the Field of Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Masonry (m/f/d)
80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term
The Chair of Concrete and Bridge Construction at ETH Zurich ( LinkedIn ) under the direction of Prof. Dr. Walter Kaufmann researches the mechanical load-bearing behavior of reinforced concrete and masonry with the aim of exploiting the actual load-bearing capacity of existing structures and efficiently planning new structures. Our investigations are based on a combination of experimental studies in unique test facilities worldwide, specially developed software tools, and the application of data-driven methods.
Please note that this job posting is for a doctoral or postdoctoral position at 100%.
Project Background
The Masonry Group established at the Chair of Concrete and Bridge Construction conducts teaching and research in the field of structural masonry. The research focus of the Masonry Group lies in the development of mechanically consistent material models, their implementation in numerical simulation tools, and validation based on large-scale component tests.
Job Description
- Conducting large-scale tests on masonry components as well as on hybrid systems of masonry and reinforced concrete
- Development of mechanical material models to describe the load-bearing behavior of masonry
- Implementation of material models in the nonlinear finite element method
- Validation of numerical models based on large-scale component tests
- Analysis of hybrid load-bearing systems of masonry and reinforced concrete under seismic loading using the nonlinear finite element method
- Support of teaching activities in the field of structural masonry
- Writing scientific publications and reports
Profile
- Master's or doctoral degree in civil engineering or equivalent
- Scientific curiosity, motivation, perseverance, and ability to work independently
- Interest in mechanical and numerical modeling of load-bearing structures
- Interest in conducting large-scale component tests
- Skills in programming and computer-aided calculations are an advantage
