The Aquatic and Isotope Biogeochemistry Group in the Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Basel, invites applications for an 18-month Lab Assistant position in our stable isotope biogeochemistry laboratory. The position is part of an international (collaborative) research project.
Our laboratory operates several isotope-ratio mass spectrometers with associated peripheries (EA, GasBench) and sample-preparation lines, supporting research in limnology, marine science, biogeochemistry, paleoclimate research, and microbial ecology.

Your position
- Preparation of samples and reference materials for nitrogen concentration and isotope analysis including analyses of compounds such as nitrous oxide and nitrate
- Application of sample-preparation techniques such as microbial conversion methods, and gas-purging systems
- Operation, quality control, and basic maintenance of mass spectrometers and associated laboratory instrumentation
- Maintaining laboratory organization and inventory, including ordering consumables, chemicals, and gases, etc.
- Working closely with, and assisting, the laboratory manager and other members of the technical and scientific team
Your profile
- A background in chemistry, environmental sciences, biology, geochemistry, or a related field, including practical laboratory experience
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage tasks and priorities independently
- The ability and willingness to follow detailed analytical protocols carefully and reproducibly
- An interest in analytical instrumentation, laboratory methods, and quantitative data analysis; experience with Python or similar tools is an asset
- Strong English communication skills; German language skills are valued but not required
- A collaborative attitude and willingness to communicate and work as part of an international team

We offer you an interesting position in a stimulating, international research environment at the University of Basel. You will join an established laboratory team and work closely with researchers and technical staff, including the laboratory manager, who will provide training and support in analytical methods, instrumentation, and laboratory procedures. The position provides the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with isotope-ratio mass spectrometry, chromatography, nitrogen isotope methods, and a range of chemical and biogeochemical laboratory techniques. While pre-existing experience with these methods is welcome, we do not expect applicants to already be experts in them.
The position is offered at 100% with a duration of 18 months, with a planned starting date in January 2027 or by arrangement. Salary and social benefits are provided according to University of Basel regulations.
