About the job
Laboratory Technician for Hardware - Consumer Electronics
We develop hardware for home appliances and personal care products on behalf of international clients. At Helbling Technik Bern, you will support a hardware team of three to five engineers who develop hardware together. The hardware team maintains close communication with the firmware and also the mechanical teams. You will accompany projects throughout the entire development cycle, from the first prototypes to production readiness. The focus of your work is the assembly, testing, and measurement of assemblies and prototypes. You support the engineers with reliable measurement data and functional samples to make valid decisions.
Area of Activity
You are the practical interface between the circuit diagram and the functioning prototype.
Specifically, this means:
- Independently assembling and wiring prototype hardware and test setups based on the specifications and circuit diagrams of the responsible hardware engineers
- Commissioning populated printed circuit boards and systematically debugging malfunctions in close coordination with the hardware team
- Performing PCB rework and soldering tasks, including fine-pitch SMT components, with high precision and without damaging adjacent components
- Conducting standard measurements with oscilloscope, multimeter, and power supply and carefully and transparently documenting the results for the project team
- Supporting test setups for EMC pre-testing and actively participating in the execution of preliminary measurements in the laboratory
- Regularly calibrating and maintaining laboratory equipment and measuring instruments and ensuring their flawless condition for daily use within the team
- Precisely executing test plans from engineers (Junior); as an experienced professional, independently conducting standard tests, escalating unusual findings, and independently managing test setups for assigned projects (Senior)
- Keeping the laboratory organised and tidy so that devices, tools, and materials are always findable and ready for use
Requirements
We are looking for a professional with genuine laboratory experience who enjoys hands-on work and takes pleasure in precise tasks.
- Completed training as an electronics technician EFZ or equivalent, alternatively training at technician HF level; the level depends on experience
- Practical experience in the laboratory or prototype manufacturing in the field of electronics, ideally with consumer products
- Confident soldering and rework skills, routine handling of laboratory equipment such as oscilloscope, multimeter, and power supply
- Advantageous:
- Familiarity with Altium Designer for viewing circuit diagrams and layouts as well as for minor adjustments
- Knowledge of relevant standards and norms, for example IEC 60335
- Willingness to familiarise oneself with EMC pre-test procedures
- Precise and reliable documentation
- Enjoys close collaboration with engineers
- Methodical working style and disciplined adherence to laboratory safety regulations
- German: fluent; English: good knowledge, required for daily collaboration
Helbling Benefits
- Products that make a difference: You contribute to devices that reach real users worldwide and go into series production tomorrow
- Technical depth: Every project brings new challenges in the laboratory, new standards, and real constraints. No two projects are alike
- Interdisciplinary teams: daily collaboration with experienced mechanical, firmware, and hardware specialists who take their work seriously
- Room for development: structured support for your professional and personal development, with access to the broader Helbling network across all disciplines
