Job description
The Faculty of Science of the University of Geneva is opening an application for a position of:
Electronics Engineer at 80-100%, 1 year renewable up to 3 years subject to available funding
at the Department of Nuclear and Particle Physics (DPNC) in the FASER research group
The Department of Nuclear and Particle Physics (DPNC) of the Faculty of Science is a very dynamic department with many notable contributions in various fields of particle physics. Within the framework of the FASER-CAL and FORTUNE detectors, which will be installed at CERN as part of the FASER experiment to study high-energy neutrinos
and search for new particles, we are looking for a junior electronics engineer, ideally with 1 or 2 years of experience in mixed analogue/digital PCB design.
The hired person will work in an R&D team in close collaboration with other specialists in electronics, software, mechanics and physics. Under the supervision of a senior engineer, the candidate will have to develop a new analogue/digital FEB (Front-End Board) from an existing obsolete version including FPGA, ADC and ASICs. This work consists of selecting components, drawing the schematic, sizing and performing analogue, power integrity and RF signal simulations, and routing the PCB.
The candidate will have to supervise the board manufacturing and carry out the final test of the assembled board. Depending on
the progress of the previous task, the work may also include the development, simulation and testing of the firmware/microcode intended for the FPGA embedded on the FEB board. The candidate will also have to assist researchers in commissioning this board and present the progress of the work at regular meetings.
Required title and skills
- Electronics engineer
- Ideally 1 year of experience in multilayer PCB design with Cadence electronic CAD tools in schematic (Orcad), placement/routing (Allegro) and simulation (PSpice)
- Knowledge of signal and power integrity (Hyperlinx, Sigrity ...)
- Knowledge of HDL languages (VHDL preferred) and FPGA design including simulation
- Proficiency in common office software
- Ability to integrate within a multidisciplinary group
- Very good knowledge of English (language commonly used within the research group) or French, and knowledge or ability to quickly acquire the other language
- Initiative and autonomy
Starting date
01.01.2027 or as soon as possible
