The Oncology Department manages, both diagnostically and therapeutically, adult patients suffering from cancerous diseases and supports patients and their relatives. The aim is to ensure access to the best anti-cancer treatment, to provide appropriate care, and to anticipate the needs of hospitalised patients (bone marrow transplant, cell therapy, immunotherapy, etc.). Concurrently, the Cancer Centre coordinates cross-sectional activities dedicated to cancer issues between services and departments.
It comprises 4 services (haematology, oncology, precision oncology, and radiotherapy) and consists of approximately 300 employees.
The radiotherapy service is responsible for assessing the therapeutic indication for referred patients and providing them with information about radiotherapy.
A medical specialty responsible for the therapeutic use of ionising radiation, radiotherapy is particularly used in the context of tumour diseases.
The service administers treatments using ionising rays and monitors patients clinically, both during and after treatment, to evaluate their response and ensure optimal tolerance of the treatment.
As a university service, it is also dedicated to research and teaching.
Job Description
Within the radiotherapy department at HUG, you will conduct nursing consultations, technical care, and clinical follow-up of outpatients. You will work on the department’s floor, across its four divisions, including ENT and breast divisions. Your role also includes nursing care for patients receiving high-dose-rate (HDR) vaginal brachytherapy.
You will apply your oncology expertise to assess needs, ensure clinical monitoring, and contribute to the prevention and management of treatment side effects. You will adapt your interventions according to the evolving situation, from a preventive, curative, or palliative perspective, and provide care within your autonomous role or under medical prescription.
Therapeutic education is an integral part of your activity. You tailor information and advice to each individual’s needs to promote their understanding of treatment, participation in care, and autonomy.
You will work closely with radiation oncologists, medical radiology technicians, medical physicists, and other professionals in the department. You will participate in coordinating the care pathway and ensuring continuity of care with intra- and extrahospital partners.
You will document your assessments and interventions in the integrated patient record (DPI) and in ARIA. You will apply radiation protection instructions specific to the department’s activities.
You will contribute to improving care practices and processes, enhancing nursing activity, and service development projects.
Qualifications
Your clinical judgement, rigour, and organisational skills enable you to prioritise and act autonomously in complex or urgent situations.
You have 3 years of experience and combine good listening skills, precise communication, and teamwork ability. You establish a trusting relationship with patients and contribute to respectful interprofessional collaboration.
You are able to cope with the emotional burden of care situations, recognise your limits, and mobilise necessary resources.
You demonstrate reliability, availability, and adaptability. You question your practices and commit to updating your knowledge and developing your skills.
You participate in internal mobility within the Oncology Department according to the organisation defined by nursing managers and required competencies.
Additional Information
Outpatient activity includes hours that may extend until 7 pm. Approximately twenty weeks per year, the nursing team operates on a 3 × 8 shift schedule; you will then participate in day, night, and weekend rotations.
