About the job
With the approval of the Energy Strategy 2050, the Swiss electorate also agreed in 2017 to the legal introduction of intelligent electricity meters (Smart Meters). Thus, we are obliged to replace all electricity meters with a Smart Meter free of charge by 2027. At the same time as the electricity meter replacement, we will also promote the automatic reading of water and gas meters.

The municipalities of Zollikon, Küsnacht and Erlenbach have each been divided into five stages, which will be expanded from 2023 until the end of 2027. As soon as the installation starts in your region, you will receive an initial information letter from us. Afterwards, Cablex AG will begin planning and you will receive the specific appointment for the electricity meter change either by phone or with a second information letter.
If you already want to know in which year the Smart Meter will be installed at your location, you can search for your address here:
Werke am Zürichsee AG has found and commissioned Cablex AG as an experienced and reliable partner for the Smart Meter rollout. Cablex AG is responsible for appointment scheduling, the electricity meter replacement, and the connection of water and gas meters.
As soon as you have received the information letter "Replacement of Electricity Meter" from us, you can arrange an appointment with Cablex AG. The contact details are listed on the information letter and below.
If you do not arrange an appointment with Cablex AG, the meter replacement will be scheduled by Cablex AG. In this case, you will receive another information letter about 3 days in advance with the appointment for the meter replacement.

Smart Meter
Within the framework of an open tender procedure, the company Landis + Gyr AG was commissioned to supply the Smart Meters E450 and E570. Landis + Gyr AG from Cham is a long-standing supplier of Werke am Zürichsee AG and has been offering energy management solutions for more than 125 years. With the meter replacement, we are simultaneously installing a so-called meter plug terminal, which will allow us to replace the meter in future without interrupting the power supply.
For the manual reading of the Smart Meter, you can find the operating instructions here.
If you are interested in using the new local customer interface, you can contact us without obligation.
Transmission of measurement data
The great advantage is that the Smart Meter automatically transmits the measurement data daily via the existing power cables and thus does not require unwanted wireless connections. This type of communication is called PLC (Power-Line Communication). The data is encrypted, received by decentralised data concentrators and then transmitted via fibre optic cables to our systems.
M-Bus installation
By installing the Smart Meter, we also have the possibility to read the measurement data from existing gas and water meters via M-Bus. For this purpose, the meters are connected to the Smart Meter with a cable through existing empty conduits or surface-mounted installations. In some houses, this connection already exists; if this is not the case for you, our partner Cablex AG will carry out these installations free of charge as part of the meter replacement.
What does a Smart Meter cost me?
There are no direct additional costs for you.
How will I be informed when a Smart Meter is installed?
Since 2022, Smart Meters have already been installed in all new builds and renovations. As soon as your electricity meter is replaced by a Smart Meter, you will be informed by Cablex AG about 2 days in advance. This can be announced by phone or by a notice titled "Power Interruption".
Why is the Smart Meter still read on site by a reader?
As long as the Smart Meter is not integrated into the communication network, it will still be read on site by readers. Only with integration into the communication network can the consumption data be transmitted automatically and on-site reading is no longer necessary.
Am I exposed to increased radiation from the Smart Meter?
No. Your Smart Meter transmits data via the existing power supply line using so-called powerline technology. This does not generate any additional radiation.
Can I opt out of a Smart Meter?
According to current legislation, we are obliged to install Smart Meters nationwide. Unfortunately, customers are not given a choice. However, we are convinced that the benefits of this technology will bring advantages to you.

Why are connections between gas and water meters and Smart Meters created?
In the course of the Smart Meter rollout, we are simultaneously setting up the connection of gas and water meters to the Smart Meter. The installation of this connection is free of charge for you. Together with you, we will develop an optimal solution tailored to the technical possibilities and the situation on site. Remote reading of the additional media reduces the effort of manual readings and thus benefits you as a customer: In addition to more efficient processes, additional costs for on-site readings can be avoided in future.
