Endowed Professorship (Extraordinariat) for Interdisciplinary and Interprofessional Rehabilitation

The University of Bern is pleased, in collaboration with the Foundation for Medical Continuing Treatment, Rehabilitation and Prevention BRH (BRH Foundation), to announce the establishment of the Professorship for Interdisciplinary and Interprofessional Rehabilitation, which is situated in the Medical Department of Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine. With the support of the BRH Foundation, the professorship is made possible through generous funding from the BRH Foundation, which provides an annual contribution for at least 15 years and a one-time start-up financing to advance interdisciplinary rehabilitation in research and teaching. The aim is to establish a beacon in rehabilitation and to promote the national and international visibility of this field.

Responsibilities of the Professorship The successful candidate will establish an innovative research centre in the field of musculoskeletal, internal oncology, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation. Promoting interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaboration is a central part of the role. This includes close cooperation within the University of Bern, with the Bern University of Applied Sciences, as well as with external clinical and academic partners. Furthermore, the development and implementation of study programmes in the field of rehabilitation are core tasks, especially focusing on integrative and cross-professional treatment concepts as well as prehabilitation. Another goal is the establishment of a teaching and research centre for rehabilitation with international reach. Additionally, digital tools and medical informatics should be effectively utilised to improve rehabilitation outcomes.

Requirements for Applicants The ideal candidate has a medical background with solid experience in rehabilitation and proven research expertise in this area as well as in relevant adjacent disciplines. A habilitation or comparable research qualification is required. They bring experience in interprofessional teaching and collaboration, particularly in fostering synergies between different disciplines, and possess the ability to successfully acquire third-party funding and lead innovative research projects. Excellent communication and leadership skills are essential to efficiently and sustainably lead diverse interdisciplinary and interprofessional teams. Profound knowledge in the use of digital technologies and medical informatics in rehabilitation, especially in the development and implementation of digital solutions to support patient care, is also advantageous, as is the ability to directly link scientific findings with clinical practice and continuously improve care quality. Good international networking and a proven successful publication record are expected. The ability to connect and integrate various professional groups to promote innovative approaches in rehabilitation is as important as experience in writing demanding scientific texts in German and English. A confident and professional manner in collaboration with experts, decision-makers and external partners is assumed. Furthermore, a willingness for continuous professional development and flexible adaptation to the requirements of a changing patient population is expected. Experience in curriculum development and the design of modern teaching formats that meet the needs of students and practice is an additional plus. A deep understanding of the relevance of diversity and inclusion in rehabilitation and their active promotion in research, teaching and practice is also expected, as well as knowledge in quality assurance and evaluation of rehabilitative processes and projects.

Conditions and Perspectives The professorship will be equipped with an employment level of 80-100% and offers access to state-of-the-art infrastructure at the Bern Rehabilitation Centre in Heiligenschwendi and at the Insel Campus. The University of Bern also provides university infrastructure and administrative support.
