About the job
The shortage of skilled workers in Switzerland is easing according to the latest Skilled Labour Shortage Index Switzerland. However, developers remain highly sought after in the job market. Patricia Eggimann, Head of Human Resources at CyOne Security, explains in an interview the advantages the company particularly offers when recruiting qualified employees.
The demand for skilled workers in Switzerland remains at a higher level than before the Corona pandemic despite a significant easing. This is the conclusion of the current Skilled Labour Shortage Index Switzerland 2024 by the Adecco Group Switzerland and the Job Market Monitor of the University of Zurich. According to the report, software and IT application developers still occupy top positions in the current ranking. The number of vacancies in these professional fields is particularly large compared to job seekers.
At CyOne Security, the main focus of recruitment is clearly on software and hardware development. Attractive working conditions and the unique range of tasks in a technically challenging environment help to fill these exciting jobs with highly qualified employees.
Patricia, what does CyOne Security particularly value when recruiting new employees? Naturally, professional skills come first: What education and experience does the candidate bring? In addition, we place a high value on potential, which we assess during an evaluation. We are open to hiring graduates from ETH or a comparable university of applied sciences. For this reason, we attend various graduate fairs every year and are pleased when we can engage with career starters.
In recruitment, it is clear to us that we explicitly do not seek job hoppers. Our complex environment and specialised tasks require in-depth understanding – onboarding new employees therefore takes a certain amount of time and personnel resources.
Fundamentally, we consider the person as a whole: Do they also bring the desired social skills? Do their values fit the respective team? However, I would like to note that it can also be inspiring when someone brings new input. This can be an enrichment for the whole team. The decision whether to hire someone is ultimately made after careful consideration of all relevant criteria by the committee, together with the line managers.
What makes the range of tasks offered by CyOne Security to employees in hardware and software development particularly exciting?
Firstly, the range of tasks is not everyday: We develop and market hardware and software security solutions so that, among others, Swiss authorities can communicate with high security. Therefore, the technical requirements for the work of our developers are very high. These are specialised tasks in a highly advanced technical environment. Broadly speaking, solutions must be found and problems solved within given parameters. These are not repetitive tasks, which makes the job overall very exciting.
What characterises CyOne Security generally as an attractive employer?
For example, the manageable company size, the positive corporate culture, and the collegial working environment provide optimal conditions for employees to feel comfortable. This is also reflected in the high loyalty among employees and towards the company. We observe a strong identification of employees with CyOne Security.
What benefits do employees enjoy?
The range extends from high flexibility in working hours to attractive social benefits and generous support for education and further training. Apart from that, the workplace is well connected by public transport. Especially in summer, the modern, air-conditioned office premises were greatly appreciated.
How would you describe the corporate culture?
I assess it as very positive. Employees treat each other with respect and openness. We also live a first-name culture, which is consistently practised from apprentices to the CEO. Furthermore, the company is authentic: what is communicated is also lived. The positive team spirit is promoted, among other things, with great events. Additionally, employees appreciate the regular small seasonal tokens as a sign of appreciation for their work.
What are the career opportunities within the company?
Of course, employees are supported when opportunities arise. For example, moving to a senior role or a project manager position offers chances to take on more specialist responsibility or the professional leadership of a project.
What importance does the support and promotion of young professionals have in the company?
We place great value on the training and development opportunities for young professionals. Every year we train two new IT apprentices – in the specialisations of application development and platform development. We also support apprentices who are completing vocational baccalaureate alongside and therefore have an additional day of classes. We enable young people with a gymnasium-level baccalaureate to undertake a shortened Way-up apprenticeship. Furthermore, we assist with entry into the professional world: school leavers are employed further if possible. We also offer support for any studies. From our perspective, investing in the promotion of young talent is worthwhile, as they are the future of the growing cyber security industry.
