Job description
The Institute of Demography and Socioeconomics (IDESO) is an interdisciplinary centre of expertise specialising in the study of inequalities between individuals in Switzerland and in certain low- or middle-income countries of the Global South.
The Faculty of Social Sciences and IDESO are opening an application for an assistant (A2) position at 80%. This position includes:
- Carrying out a doctoral thesis on a topic related to the areas of expertise of the professors at IDESO.
- Undertaking the following teaching tasks:
- One of the seminars associated with the course "Quantitative Methods" given by Dr Marianna Chavez, Prof. Nathalie Giger and Prof. Matthias Studer (Bachelor, second part).
- Assisting Prof. Philippe Wanner for the supplementary study of the course "Demographic Issues in Industrialised Countries" (Master).
- Assisting Prof. Matthias Studer for the seminar of the course "Survey Data Analysis" (Master).
- Monitoring students, invigilating and marking assessments for these teachings.
- Participating in marking the exams for the course "Thinking Society" (Bachelor) (part of Prof. Solène Morvant-Roux).
- Participating in juries for dissertations and internship reports in socioeconomics.
Required title and skills
The candidate must hold a Master’s degree in socioeconomics or an equivalent qualification in social sciences. A Master’s degree in progress may be accepted if obtained no later than 6 months after the start date.
The candidate must also demonstrate:
- Research work (dissertation, seminar work) in one or more areas of expertise of IDESO.
- A solid command and experience of quantitative research methods and statistical software (R, Stata or equivalent). Good knowledge of R is an asset.
- Proficiency in scientific writing in French and good skills in English.
- Ease in interacting with students and working in a team.

The candidate will be hired on a two-year contract from the Department of Public Instruction (DIP) which may be renewed for two successive periods, respectively of two years and one year. The maximum duration of the assistant position is therefore five years.
The thesis topic must be officially submitted to the Faculty before the end of the first year.
