History
The "Helvti" is a magnificent place with tradition and history. In the late 70s and the turbulent 80s, Zurich was not yet a European hotspot for nightlife. Only the "Helvti" bar sparkled in the Zurich night sky. Here people met before and after the "demo", musicians, artists, students and journalists from the nearby "Tages-Anzeiger" came together to talk, and here the myth of "Züri brännt" was born. When all other venues were already closed, one could still philosophise about this and that at the marble counter well past midnight. The "Helvti" was the starting point of the countercultural revolution, the secret home for illegal bars and the squatted artists' houses, which gave the city the vibrant cultural and nightlife scene it enjoys today.
The Helvti bar was originally located directly at the Stauffacher tram stop and had to move 100 metres further towards the city centre to Stauffacherquai 1 in the early 80s due to a new building. This made the venue even more independent. The bar on the ground floor and the dining restaurant on the first floor developed into a landmark of both old and new Zurich – leisurely yet innovative, bourgeois yet progressive. This combination was reflected in the colourful mix of guests.
Today, the "Helvti" serves as a meeting point for this characteristic mix of bohemia and bourgeoisie. At the tables, people feast and at the bar, they philosophise late into the night.
