Job Description
The University of Geneva operates a real estate portfolio of more than 200,000 m², including teaching and research buildings with complex technical infrastructures in science and medicine. With an energy budget of approximately 18 MCHF/year and one of the highest consumption levels in the canton, energy management is a major strategic challenge.
In a context of energy transition, pressure on operating costs, and increasing complexity of installations, the University is creating an Energy Manager position to strengthen its internal capacity to manage energy performance, sustainably control its costs, and lead the environmental transformation of its real estate portfolio.
Your Mission
At the University level, you manage the energy and environmental performance of the real estate portfolio. You work across the board on owned and leased buildings as well as buildings operated by third parties when the University bears the energy costs.
Your role has a dual purpose: to sustainably control energy consumption and costs and to lead the reduction of the environmental footprint of the portfolio on a decarbonisation trajectory. You identify optimisation levers, prioritise actions, oversee their implementation, and monitor results. Depending on the scope, you directly manage energy improvement projects for installations or coordinate them with competent partners, notably the OCBA.
Reporting to the Operations sector of the Real Estate Service within the Buildings and Logistics Division, you assume the following main responsibilities:
- You ensure overall management of energy consumption and expenditure of the portfolio, with a clear objective of cost reduction and measurable savings.
- You lead energy optimisation initiatives building by building, either directly or with the support of specialised contractors, working closely with technical managers — Building Operations.
- You support users, especially in technical buildings, laboratories, and complex infrastructures, to rationalise needs and optimise energy use without compromising research, teaching, or operational requirements.
- You identify, prioritise, and manage energy improvement projects for installations, such as equipment replacement, modernisation of technical installations, optimisation of existing systems, or deployment of renewable energy production.
- You structure the portfolio’s energy data, develop monitoring tools useful for management, produce technical and economic analyses, support management in decision-making, oversee energy and CO₂ indicator tracking, and structure the portfolio’s decarbonisation trajectory in line with institutional objectives.
The post holder may be called upon to undertake other tasks depending on the Service’s needs.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- You hold a higher education degree (HES) or equivalent in energy engineering, HVAC, building thermal engineering, or a related field, and have at least five years of proven experience in the technical operation of complex buildings or in energy management of a significant real estate portfolio.
- You are able to analyse consumption, transform data into decisions, lead optimisation processes, and manage technical projects in a multi-stakeholder environment. You are comfortable at the interface between field operations, management, contractors, users, and leadership. You combine analytical rigour, a sense of priorities, autonomy, and results orientation. A good understanding of scientific, technical, or hospital-university environments is a significant asset.
