The Engel lab offers a laboratory technician position in microbiology at the Department of Fundamental Microbiology, University of Lausanne, Switzerland.
Starting date : Sep 1st, 2024 or by arrangement
Length of contract : at least until Aug 31st, 2025
Work percentage : 100%

The Engel lab carries out interdisciplinary research in the field of anima-microbe symbiosis and microbiome research. Specifically, we are studying interaction between gut bacteria and their honey bee host combining genomics, bioinformatics approach, and gnotobiotic bee experiments.
We are looking for a research technician with experience in experimental microbiology. The successful candidate will be involved in carrying out experiments for ongoing research projects in the laboratory, such as DNA extraction and bacterial culturing from diverse bee species or bee colonization experiments. In addition, the person will help in taking care of our apiary.
We offer an interesting position in a young international team, continuous training and flexible working hours in a modern laboratory.
We are looking for a candidate with following qualifications, experience and skills:
• An apprenticeship certificate (C.F.C), a Bachelor of Science or an equivalent or higher degree
• Working experience in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, insect biology or in a related field
• Experience with PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA/RNA extraction, qPCR, or bacterial culturing
• Good time management and multitasking skills
• Be capable of working independently and in a team
• Work with carful diligence
• Knowledge of oral and written English, Knowledge of French is desirable
• Highly motivated and willing to learn new techniques
The Department of Fundamental Microbiology offers a supportive and stimulating environment, with access to excellent experimental facilities. The environment is highly international, and all activities are conducted in English. Beyond the training in the host laboratory, numerous possibilities for further continuous training exist. Moreover, you will be part of the NCCR Microbiomes with more than 20 participating research teams from Switzerland.
