Two PhD Positions in Macroeconomics

«A place where knowledge is created» - As one of Europe's leading universities of economics and business administration, the University of St.Gallen (HSG), Switzerland, is committed to the education of over 8500 students and is one of the largest employers in the region, providing around 3100 employees with an attractive and innovative environment for research.
In connection with the research project "Uncertainty, Beliefs, and Crises in Macroeconomics", funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), we invite applications for
Two PhD Positions in Macroeconomics
starting March 1, 2020 (negotiable).
Both positions are for four years. One of them will be located at the University of Lucerne (Chair Prof. Manuel Oechslin) and the other one at the University of St. Gallen (Chair Prof. Johannes Binswanger).

The Project
The above-mentioned research project investigates the functioning of an economy in which agents have only a limited understanding of how the economy works ("fundamental uncertainty"). While this is a key property of real-world economies, it is barely reflected in existing (macro-)economic models. The ultimate aim of the project is to contribute to a better understanding of the origins of economic crises and of possible measures to prevent them. The project combines theoretical, empirical, and simulation-based analysis. Please click here for a summary of the project.

What we offer
The successful applicants will complete a prestigious graduate course program (including the Swiss National Bank's Gerzensee Program) and write a doctoral thesis. The thesis should consist of a collection of research papers that broadly fit into the outlined research agenda. The two positions will be part of a team of PhD students and more senior researchers and will offer ample opportunity for collaboration. The salaries, based on the SNSF scale for PhD students, are internationally competitive.
What we are looking for
Applicants should hold (or soon earn) an excellent master's degree in economics (or mathematics, statistics). We value a strong interest in fundamental macroeconomic questions and strong intuitive thinking.
Application
Your application file should include a motivation letter, a complete CV, and transcripts. Please send your file by email to jobs@unilu.ch and use reference number 4100/02.
