Role:
In this role, you take responsibility for the operation, optimisation, and further development of scientific computing systems. You ensure a stable, high-performance, and secure environment for demanding scientific applications and ensure that researchers can work efficiently with complex data and models. You analyse technical requirements, evaluate suitable technologies, and implement solutions that meet the high demands for computing power and availability. Additionally, you coordinate maintenance, monitoring, and troubleshooting of the systems and work closely with specialists to design optimal workflows. As an experienced professional, you contribute your expertise to continuously improve existing structures and introduce innovative approaches into the scientific IT landscape.
Responsibilities:
As a Linux engineer, you take primary responsibility for the WLCG Tier-3 cluster computing infrastructure at PSI to support the CERN CMS experiment.
You operate, maintain, and optimise Linux-based research and computing infrastructures.
You support the Swiss CMS user community in using the Tier-3 infrastructure and maintain active communication with users.
In this role, you work closely with the national WLCG Tier-2 centre at CSCS.
You contribute to the shared operational responsibilities in the HPC/HTC services at PSI and ensure mutual support within the team.
In this role, you participate in the planning and further development of future Tier-3 and Tier-2 infrastructures and services for the HL-LHC era.
Qualifications:
You have solid knowledge of Linux system administration in production or research environments.
You have experience with automation and DevOps practices, such as Ansible or Puppet, scripting in Bash and Python, Git-based workflows, and ideally CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code concepts.
You are skilled in monitoring, troubleshooting, and debugging complex system and software issues in production environments.
You demonstrate strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and collaborative skills.
You are ideally familiar with batch systems, distributed computing infrastructure, container technologies, or high-throughput computing environments.
You preferably have knowledge of the WLCG infrastructure and services or other scientific computing environments.
You speak fluent German.
