Mechanical Design Engineer - Fluid Dynamics (m/f/d)

As a first-tier supplier to our renowned business partner, Roche Diagnostics in Rotkreuz, we are immediately seeking a motivated and committed Mechanical Design Engineer for a temporary assignment of 1 year, with the option of extension.

The Liquid Handling team in Rotkreuz is the expert team for liquid handling solutions of Roche diagnostic instruments. In collaboration with various project and product teams, the group develops, maintains, and tests fluid systems, pipetting and dosing solutions for diagnostic instruments including mechanics, electronics, real-time software, and algorithms for monitoring. As a Mechanical Design Engineer, the incumbent supports the assessment and development of new technologies in the field of liquid handling for IVD product development as well as the creation of cost-efficient and reliable fluidic concepts that meet system requirements. With profound expertise in fluid dynamics including experimental fluid dynamics and the ability to understand the overall system context, a significant contribution is made to the success of the future diagnostics portfolio.

Tasks & Responsibilities

• Concept assessment and parameter determination: Analysis and evaluation of new technologies and their testing; definition and verification of various parameter settings using fluidic and physical expertise to ensure the required pipetting performance for the specific application.
• Liquid handling solution development: Support of the technical implementation of liquid handling solutions in the context of IVD product developments; fluidic optimisation of components together with design engineers using CFD and physical know-how as well as experimental verification of simulation results.
• Feasibility studies: Initiation, management, and execution of feasibility studies in the field of liquid handling to meet technical requirements and minimise development risks.
• Test rig development: Definition of the required test rigs for feasibility studies and parameter determination; commissioning of the test rigs in collaboration with mechanical, electronic, and software engineers including programming of the necessary software processes.

Must Haves

• Completed degree (Bachelor or Master of Science) in mechanical engineering with a focus on fluid dynamics / fluid mechanics
• 1 to 3 years of experience with CFD software and corresponding methods for simulating complex fluid flows (including grid generation, simulation, and post-processing)
• Strong analytical skills as well as an independent and structured approach to analysing and solving complex problems
• Enjoyment of experimental fluid dynamics and a hands-on mentality when working on test setups to confirm theories and verify system performance
• Solid programming skills in Python and C# for automating complex test procedures as well as proficient use of modern AI tools (such as Gemini or Claude Code) for efficient solutions
• Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary collaboration in international, cross-functional teams and professional exchange with experts
• Fluent German and English skills, both spoken and written
