About the job
With more than 13,000 employees representing 160 professions, the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) are a reference institution at both national and international levels. To learn more about our institution, take a few minutes to consult our 2025 retrospective by clicking here.
As part of optimising their structures, the HUG are creating an Executive Directorate of Operating Theatres (DBO) directly attached to the Deputy General Management (the director took office on 16 March 2026). This new centralised structure is entirely dedicated to the management of operating theatres with a clear objective: to strengthen governance, interprofessional synergies, optimise patient care and processes, while driving innovation and research.
The HUG operating theatres comprise a state-of-the-art technical platform made up of 8 modern blocks representing nearly 41 intervention rooms, designed to offer optimal care 24/7. Each year, more than 25,000 interventions are performed by 1,500 dedicated professionals, covering all advanced surgical disciplines (gynaecology-obstetrics, ENT, maxillofacial, cardiac, vascular, visceral, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, etc., including robotic surgery).
Context: Biomedical engineering at the heart of operating theatre transformation
Today, the operating theatre has become an environment of extreme technological complexity (surgical robotics, electrosurgery, advanced imaging, 4K/3D audiovisual integration, network interconnections, artificial intelligence and medical device cybersecurity).
At HUG, we are convinced that the role of this biomedical engineer is to embody a true application engineer and strategic partner role. A genuine bridge between clinical teams, surgeons, industry professionals and technical services, you do not merely repair or perform "troubleshooting": you anticipate, advise, secure, optimise and support teams in the constant technological evolution of the theatre and ensure the safety and availability of the operating theatre technical platforms daily with the theatre technicians.
Within the new Directorate of Operating Theatres (DBO), you play a central and cross-functional role in the strategic, digital and operational management of biomedical equipment:
As part of Governance & Strategic Planning, you must contribute to the multi-year planning of medical devices (equipment and associated consumables), ensure the inventory is updated and manage fixed assets.
You are also responsible for developing the DBO equipment plan; supporting the expression of user needs, evaluating existing solutions and challenging requests in line with institutional orientations. You actively participate in multiprofessional groups for acquisition and renewal files led by the Biomedical Service. You will coordinate tests and commissioning with theatre technicians.
As a technological referent & active interface, you provide your technical and technological expertise during exchanges within the Directorate and operating theatre governance.
Regarding Digital, Video and Network Integration, you participate in managing complex interfaces and interoperability between equipment, working closely with IT services on network and audiovisual integration (PACS, video streams, etc.) of the operating theatre.
For Operational Support & Continuous Improvement, you supervise first-level support, coordinate technical interventions, optimally plan preventive maintenance via CMMS (in connection with the Biomedical Maintenance Sector and theatre technicians), contribute to the management of medical devices (MD/IMD), loans and associated contracts, while contributing to transversal projects.
For Training & Change Support, in collaboration with suppliers, you must design training for the various operating theatre equipment. Organise and relay this training to nursing and medical teams to optimise and secure usage.
For Major Modernisation & Infrastructure Projects, you intervene for the DBO, in connection with the biomedical service and real estate management, as an advisor to architects and project managers during renovation and theatre evolution works. You must define needs, structure technical programmes, anticipate installation constraints and help ensure overall coherence between infrastructure and clinical practices.
Regarding Technological Watch, Safety & Risk Management, you must ensure active monitoring of innovations (robotics, AI, assisted surgery). You must also ensure regulatory compliance, anticipate obsolescence, collaborate with the materiovigilance commission to secure traceability and actively participate in quality and risk mitigation processes (including radioprotection, in collaboration with Medical Management).
Qualifications
You hold a university degree in biomedical engineering (or equivalent training completed by solid specialisation in a hospital environment).
You have at least five years of successful experience in a hospital or clinical setting in a similar role at the heart of interventional environments.
You possess excellent mastery of advanced medical technologies (notably in operating theatres). Proven ease with IT tools, network systems and health data architectures.
You have perfect command of French, both spoken and written, and good professional knowledge of English (monitoring, technical documentation, exchanges with industry).
You have a strong curiosity for technological innovation and an open mind towards new operating theatre paradigms (AI, robotics, interoperability).
You have analytical and synthesis skills and strong autonomous decision-making ability.
You have excellent communication skills, listening skills, diplomacy and a strong client/service orientation.
You have demonstrated ability to support change, work in multiprofessional teams and show rigour and discretion.
