About the job
With more than 13,000 employees representing 160 professions, the Geneva University Hospitals are a reference institution at both national and international levels. To learn more about our institution, take a few minutes to consult our 2025 retrospective by clicking here .
With nearly 1,200 employees, the Department of Acute Medicine (DMA) includes the Services of Anaesthesiology, Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, Intensive Care, and Emergency Services. It fulfils a fourfold mission through its services, which provide their expertise in frequent interaction with the entire Geneva University Hospitals, thanks to a transversal platform, with the aim of ensuring the best possible care for patients.
The Emergency Service, a multidisciplinary structure, has the mission to welcome patients 24/7, regardless of the nature of their health problem. It aims to provide rapid and effective care, directing patients to the infrastructure best suited to their case.
Integrated within this service, the Emergency Health Unit (144) is under the authority and supervision of the Cantonal Health Office of the Republic and Canton of Geneva. This unit handles requests from the number 144 and the number 0800 116 117 (Geneva Health Centre); it regulates emergency situations, mobilises necessary resources, and coordinates rescue operations. It also plays a crucial role in informing and directing callers to appropriate care centres when an emergency intervention is not required. It also manages inter-hospital transfers, whether by land or air. With about 70 employees, it manages 300,000 telephone calls annually, including 110,000 emergencies, and creates 90,000 regulation files. It also coordinates 48,000 ambulance missions and 4,500 SMUR interventions per year. In exceptional event situations, it establishes and manages the Emergency Health Response and Regulation Operational Centre (CORUS) dedicated to monitoring and coordinating the cantonal exceptional health situation. Regulation within the unit is ensured by qualified paramedics (HES nurse or ES ambulance technician) who filter emergency calls, assist witnesses in performing first aid gestures, and provide medical advice by telephone, all based on medically delegated protocols.
Furthermore, the Emergency Health Unit (144) is responsible for forecasting, organising, and planning urgent health aid at the cantonal level, in collaboration with the Cantonal Health Office. The unit also holds responsibility and management of information and communication systems related to urgent health aid in partnership with the Cantonal Office of Information Systems and Digital Technology (OCSIN).
The unit also leads a research programme focused on modelling emergency care processes, including the management of cardio-respiratory arrests and triage in emergency situations. It develops innovative projects for creating evaluation and remote assistance tools for first aid gestures. It also establishes itself as an essential training centre, notably for medically delegated paramedical regulation, supported by specific simulators within its teaching and simulation centre.
Lead, in connection with the Information and Communication Systems Sector (SSIC) of the Emergency Health Unit (144), the Artificial Intelligence and Data Hub (PIAD) and ensure the development, operation, and integration of artificial intelligence solutions primarily meeting the needs of health emergency centres.
