The GENEVA LIBRARY (BGE) is a service of the Department of Culture and Digital Transition. Founded in the 16th century, responsible for the cantonal legal deposit, it holds the oldest and most significant heritage collection in French-speaking Switzerland, comprising notably manuscripts, books, maps, posters, scores, photographs, and archives - important for the academic community and the general public of the region. The collections of the Geneva Library are distributed across four sites located at Bastions, the Iconography Centre, La Musicale, and Les Délices.
The BGE participates in ProjNum, a cross-cutting large-scale digitisation project of municipal heritage collections led by the Department of Culture and Digital Transition (DCTN) alongside other cultural institutions of the City as well as support services. Documentary Information Specialist
on a fixed-term contract at 80%
Your mission and responsibilities:
- Participate in all tasks related to managing a documentary information service within the framework of the digitisation project of the City of Geneva’s heritage collections (ProjNum);
- Update and manage the collections selected for digitisation;
- Catalogue, inventory, and index documents on all types of media, ensuring metadata consistency;
- Ensure the organisation and physical management of collections before, during, and after digitisation operations;
- Conduct documentary research necessary for the identification, classification, pagination, and description of the collections;
- Take part in digitisation operations and coordinate documentary activities with the various project stakeholders, including external partners;
- Make corrections and updates in inventory files;
- Participate, at the request of management, in working groups established within the project framework;
- Write concise and structured reports after analysing and synthesising homogeneous data collected (e.g., production reports and reporting requested from the service provider);
- Organise and distribute documents according to defined indexing, classification, and numbering rules;
- Maintain active information monitoring to present up-to-date choices in a specific field;
- Conduct specialised research on a subject and identify the diversity of media to ensure comprehensive research.
Your profile:
- Holder of a Bachelor of Science in Information or an equivalent qualification.
- At least 3 years of professional experience in documentary information and mastery of principles of document management, indexing, cataloguing, and information retrieval.
- Comfortable with common IT tools as well as specialised software in the documentary field, with excellent analytical, synthesis, and writing skills.
- Interest in technological developments and rigor in performing duties. Strong capacity for research, information monitoring, and organisation of documentary content.
- Able to communicate easily with diverse audiences and interlocutors.
- Enjoys teamwork while being capable of working independently.
