About the job
You will take the lead for a new Kubernetes platform - from the initial concept to stable operation.
Senior System Engineer Kubernetes & Linux
Who needs your support?
Your new challenge is at EveryWare, the leading Swiss cloud and IT service provider with its own highly scalable data centre and network infrastructure in Zurich - specialising in the needs of business customers. With more than 20 years of expertise, the company designs and operates private, public and hybrid cloud architectures, hosting and managed IT platforms. Around 250 employees, 90% of whom are specialised engineers, bring international innovations practically into Swiss companies. Over 3000 companies and 30 business partners have already chosen EveryWare as a partner. More than 200 successfully completed major projects for business customers, including clients from the banking and insurance sectors, demonstrate EveryWare's competence.
How you create added value
You don’t just want to keep systems running, but build the platform behind them yourself? In Team Alpha, you take the lead in building new Kubernetes platforms - including the deployment pipeline. This is not a finished environment where you are assigned a part: something new is being created here, and you are the one building it.
Alongside this, you are responsible together with your team colleagues for the infrastructure of our managed service customers from the banking and insurance environment. Everything runs on-premises in our own private cloud - we do not rent from a hyperscaler, we build ourselves. The team is small and communication is direct: if you have a good idea and can justify it, you implement it.
Your tasks at a glance:
- You build, operate and expand our new Kubernetes platform for new customer projects.
- You plan and manage the CI/CD deployments and drive automation forward within the team.
- You technically lead customer projects and internal projects - from planning to timely implementation.
- You manage our IdM and API management infrastructure.
- Together with your team colleagues, you operate and expand our Linux, Unix and FreeBSD servers and the Linux-based databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB, DB2). The legacy environment will remain with us for several more years - you need to know it, but your focus lies elsewhere.
- You take on second- and third-level support for our customers and analyse complex incidents down to the root cause.
- You participate in the on-call service: a 5-person rotation, so one week every five weeks. Night shifts are rare, and you are never alone.
What sets you apart
One thing is really important to us, the rest is secondary: you have operated Kubernetes productively for several years. Not in a homelab and not "just started a container once", but have set up and been responsible for larger environments. The Linux background naturally follows from this.
In addition, you have an attitude that fits us: you organise yourself, like to make decisions independently and work your way into unfamiliar systems without waiting for finished documentation.
What you should bring:
- Several years of experience in productive Kubernetes operation, ideally including Rancher.
- Solid Linux background as a system engineer, preferably at an IT service provider or hoster.
- Experience with CI/CD and automation (Gitea, GitLab, GitLab Runner, Jenkins, Harbor, Ansible, etc.) as well as confident scripting (Shell, Python).
- Basic understanding of networking (TCP/IP) - you don’t have to configure firewalls, but you do need to understand what is happening on the network.
- You are not a religious Linux user: Windows is also present in our environment.
- You have an interest in further development - those who think they already know everything get bored with us.
- Very good German, you understand Swiss German. English at a negotiation level - you must be able to argue with our partners, not just communicate.
- Residence within reach: on-call duty requires being physically present at the data centre within one hour.
What you do not need to bring: Solaris, AIX or certificates. We assess your thinking in the interview based on a concrete case - not on paper.
Advantages: experience from the banking or insurance environment, with identity management (Authentik, FreeIPA).
