Junior Linux System Administrator & IT Support (m/f/d)
The Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich is looking to strengthen its IT Services group with a committed individual passionate about Linux systems and modern IT infrastructures. In a versatile and innovative environment, you will take on responsibility early, actively participate in projects, and continuously develop your professional skills.
Our seven-member team manages a powerful IT infrastructure tailored to the needs of professorships and research groups. Together with the department members, we actively shape the digital future and continuously develop our systems and services using modern technologies.
Job Description

- We take care of the administration of macOS, Windows, and Linux clients for the department (JAMF, Baramundi).
- We maintain and develop the department's server landscape (Linux, Windows) with services such as web, virtualisation, databases, AI solutions, storage, Nextcloud, and backup systems.
- With our helpdesk, we support and advise our researchers, staff, and students on IT matters.
- We develop tools, interfaces, and web applications as needed.
- Collaboration with department groups and/or researchers or with ETH's central IT on projects.
Your role includes supporting our Senior Linux Administrator with a focus on operating, further developing, and maintaining the server landscape as well as automating and digitising processes. Thanks to your enthusiasm for IT technologies, you think holistically, contribute new ideas, and develop sustainable and practical solutions beyond your own area of responsibility.
Profile
- Completed IT training (EFZ) or a comparable qualification.
- Solid knowledge in Linux system administration and experience with scripting languages such as Bash.
- Knowledge of virtualisation technologies (Proxmox, Docker) as well as storage solutions (Ceph, S3) and backup systems.
- Experience in developing and operating web applications.
- Knowledge of network administration.
- Practical experience in designing, implementing, and further developing IT solutions.
- Structured, independent, and careful working style with a high awareness of quality.
- Team-oriented personality with enjoyment in exchanging ideas in an international environment.
- Commitment to training and support in mentoring apprentices (IT).
- Willingness to continuously educate yourself and explore new technologies.
- Very good German skills in spoken and written form as well as good English skills.
