The newly established AI/ML in Biomedicine group led by Prof. Marianna Rapsomaniki at the Biomedical Data Science Center at the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) and the University of Lausanne (UNIL) is looking for highly motivated PhD students who will work on projects in AI/ML applied to oncology.

Contexte

The Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) is one of five Swiss university hospitals. Through its collaboration with the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University of Lausanne and the EPFL, CHUV plays a leading role in the areas of medical care, medical research and training.

The mission of the AI/ML for Biomedicine group is to develop new AI/ML approaches to elucidate cancer mechanisms across scales using heterogeneous single-cell data, with or without spatial resolution. Topics of special interest include modeling 3D genome regulation within a cell, cellular interactions within the tumor microenvironment, and effects of drug perturbations at a patient level. We are part of the Biomedical Data Science Center (BDSC), a service, education and translational research platform joint between the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) and the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University of Lausanne (UNIL). Through its collaboration with the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the UNIL and the EPFL, CHUV plays a leading role in the areas of medical care, medical research and training.

Mission

  • You will devise new AI/ML methodologies based on e.g., graph representation learning, multimodal AI, and/or generative modeling
  • You will tailor these methodologies to investigate biologically relevant problems, such as biomarker discovery, disease subtyping, or drug perturbation modeling
  • You will collaborate with basic scientists and clinicians and apply these methodologies on a variety of experimental datasets (e.g., single‑cell omics, spatial omics, organoid drug screens) available to the group through established collaborations
  • You will work collaboratively in a young and dynamic team of computational biologists and AI/ML researchers
  • You will disseminate scientific findings through publications and conference presentations.

Profil

  • M.Sc. in Computer/Data Science, Computational Biology/Bioinformatics or related
  • Computational background in AI/ML
  • Experience in working with large biological datasets (e.g., single-cell, spatial omics)
  • High intrinsic motivation and scientific curiosity
  • Programming skills in Python and practical experience with PyTorch or similar as well as single-cell data analysis frameworks
  • Excellent analytical, communication and organizational skills
  • Capacity to work collaboratively within the group, but also to progress independently
  • Prior knowledge of molecular biology is not required but it is a strong plus
  • Fluent in English – French is a plus.
